The energy produced by homes in the UK are responsible for a ¼ of our carbon emissions. Not only is this not great for the environment but it also isn’t great for our pockets. Take a look at some of these energy-saving tips to see how you can save.
Insulation
Did you know that loft insulation can bring down the cost of your energy bills by up to £175 a year and that cavity wall insulation can save you up to £135 a year? Costing from £100-£350 to install, these home improvements will pay for themselves within 2 years.
If you are elderly or living in a low-income household you may also be able to get insulation on your house for free. Check out Money Saving Expert’s guide to see if you are eligible for this service from one of the big energy providers.
Draughts
Draughts are another way of heat getting out of the house. If your windows are draughty try using draught proofing strips around the frames. For draughts under the door buy a draught excluder. It could be worth looking into getting new windows and doors if you are suffering from a lot of escaping heat, especially if you currently own your property. It may be expensive and you may think it won’t make much of a difference, but as it is an investment it is a reward you’ll be seeing for years to come.
Grants
Before you make energy saving improvements on your home check if you are eligible for a grant to help fund the costs. Grants such as the Warm Home Discount Scheme offer money towards electricity bills (and maybe even gas depending on your provider) for those in poorly insulated homes on income-based benefits, such as low income or pensions. The good news is that it will not affect your Winter Fuel Payment or Cold Weather Payment.
You can also still qualify if you use a pre-payment or PAYG meter. Your energy supplier will be able to tell you how they work around this, such as using vouchers to top-up instead.
Check out the Energy Saving Trust to see if there are any available grants in your area. You may even be able to get solar power or a boiler replacement – you don’t know the possibilities until you check.
