Valentine’s day is the one time of the year that it’s perfectly acceptable to embrace your mushy side. You might think you’re hard as stone, hate all this lovey-dovey stuff and maybe your partner does too. But there’s a reason you’re both together, and Valentine’s day is the time you need to shout about it. So here you’ll find 33 romantic Valentine’s day ideas and gifts to get that beautiful ball of love rolling.
Now I’m not saying that the only way to show your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife you love them is to do one of these things. As I pointed out in our 31 Unique Valentine’s Day Ideas post, the best thing you can do on the day is personalise it to your partner. Do they really hate displays of affection? Then some of these ideas won’t be subtle enough for them. I’ve made sure there’s something for everyone, but if you’re still unsure then you can take a look at any of our other Valentine’s guides and you’re bound to find something they’ll love.

33 Romantic Valentine’s Day Ideas And Gifts
1/ Little Love Notes
Leave post-it notes around the house, in their work bag, on their pillow etc. Why not get some heart shaped ones, to be extra romantic?
2/ Plan A Surprise Outing
Plan something they wouldn’t expect, like a trip to the zoo or an expensive meal. It doesn’t have to be on Valentine’s Day itself, you could make it even more of a surprise by planning it after they finish work on the Friday night, or on Sunday. Just make sure you give them enough prior warning for them to get dressed up if needed. Look at Groupon for some inspiration or maybe even deals.
3/ Send Flowers Or Chocolates To Their Work
Which is obviously only good if they’re actually working on the day. Just make sure you check they can receive post to their workplace before you send anything (or pop in and deliver it yourself!). Moonpig is good to have a browse.
4/ Back Massage
This is one of those brilliant romantic Valentine’s gifts for men or women that you can’t really go wrong with. And, of course, if they’re not a fan of back massages then go for something they do like; a foot rub, head massage, pamper evening etc. Have a word with your local beauticians or a look at Wowcher for any city deals.
5 – 6/ Chocolate Massage Oil And Deluxe Head Massager
To go with point 4, these are two of the many fantastic romantic Valentine’s Day ideas for a gift. Something they can unwrap and use straight away. The romantic chocolate massage oil is well reviewed and the deluxe head massager is better quality than most others.
7/ Clean The House
A little but good one, especially if you’re normally the slacker when it comes to cleaning. It won’t go unappreciated and is a lovely Valentine’s day gift if you’re worried about sticking to a budget. Just make sure you give him or her a good, bought, Valentine’s gift too.
8/ Watch Something They Love
Throw out the romance movies and watch something you know they’ll love. Although it might not seem like it, a cute Valentine’s day idea might be to throw on an action, or even a horror movie. Whatever the guy or girl you’re with loves, make sure you put aside your own feelings for the genre and sit down to watch it.
9/ Make Breakfast In Bed
Come on, make an effort, it’s Valentine’s day! Make their favourite thing, even if it’s just porridge, and pop it on a tray with a nice cup of tea or coffee and a mini vase with a flower. They’ll appreciate the effort!
10 – 12/ Heart Frying Pan, Fried Egg Pan, Breakfast Hamper For Two
Right, so you cook up the greatest Valentine’s day breakfast ever made? No problem, but these might help; the heart-shaped frying pan from Amazon, egg-sized heart pan from Find Me A Gift and a Valentine’s Breakfast Hamper For Two from The Gift Shop at Amazon.
13/ Luxury Champagne and Truffles Hamper
This is the ultimate in Valentine’s breakfast hampers. I mean, not many people have champagne on a regular occurrence, so this would definitely kick your Valentine’s day off to an awesome start. You can grab the Luxury Valentine’s Champagne Hamper.
If you check out the 23 Absolutely Incredible Valentine’s Ideas For Him you’ll find some ideas for making your own hamper too – with low-cost empty basket ideas for you to fill up!
14/ Take Them To Lunch (On A Work Day)
This is one of the few romantic Valentine’s day ideas that you might need permission for. Make sure it’s okay for you to walk into where your partner works before you attempt it, you don’t want them getting in trouble. If they don’t have a long enough lunch break to go out with you, make them a special packed lunch and drop it off for them.
15/ Make A Special Dinner
This cute Valentine’s day idea only really works if you’re not normally the one who cooks, or you both normally cook together. Just prepare well in advance so you don’t muck it up!
16/ Chocolate Fondue Set
Chocolate fondue is always one of those romantic valentine’s ideas that, in theory, sounds great. In practice you don’t want to spending £50+ for a chocolate fountain you’ll be getting out just a few times a year. This Heart-shaped fondue is from Amazon and is a bargain too.
17/ Get A Takeaway
You definitely want to make them dinner. Really, you do. But you suck at cooking. You know it, they know it, that’s why you’re not normally the one who cooks. That’s fine, everyone loves a good takeaway! Team it up with that movie she or he loves and you’re on to a winning night.
18/ Make Them Lunch With A Note
This is one for the week leading up to / after Valentine’s day, although you can do it at any time of the year. If you don’t normally make your partner lunch, prepare something nice and pop it in a bag. Remember to include a cute Valentine’s note with something sweet to make them smile!
19/ Replay Your First Date
A lovely little idea I’ve picked straight out of our 29 Fantastic Valentine’s Ideas For Her guide, which has some more romantic Valentine’s day ideas if there’s not enough for you here! Do this from scratch. Ask them out, just like you did back then. Go to the same (or a similar) place you both did the first time. Wear similar clothes. Remind your girl or guy just how much you love them and how great that first time together was.
20 – 23/ Personalised Romantic Valentine’s Trinkets
Ahhhh, it’s getting well soppy now, isn’t it? These cuties don’t need much of an introduction, so here’s where to find them:
20. Tiny Message In A Bottle from NotOnTheHighstreet
21. Gramography Pixel Heart Print from Firebox
22. Personalised Envelope Cufflinks from NotOnTheHighstreet
23. Personalised Soundtrack To Us from NotOnTheHighstreet
24/ Have A Treasure Hunt
If your partner loves cute and romantic gifts, but you’re not sure what specific thing would be the best for them on Valentine’s day, get them a few little things and make them into a treasure hunt. You could even get friends and family involved to make it extra special!
25/ Dedicate The Day To Them
This will probably be one of the best received romantic Valentine’s day ideas; spend the whole day doing everything you know they love, and making/eating all of their favourite foods. Add in this Valentine’s Pamper Hamper to make it a day they remember!
26/ Spend The Day At Home
You don’t have to take your partner out anywhere fancy for Valentine’s day. Sometimes the best thing you can do is plan to do absolutely nothing. Stay in bed, don’t answer the door or phone, and if you have kids arrange for them to be with their grandparents or at their friend’s house. Take Valentine’s day as a time to completely relax; you’ve earned it!
27/ Go Out For A Picnic
The weather might be a tad cold right now for a picnic, but you could still try it if it’s a sunny day. Remember to pack their favourite food plus some drinks and you’re onto a winner.
28/ Sign Up To A Class Together
Has your partner always wanted to go dancing with you? Or maybe learn a new language? Let them know that you’re ready to sign up, and go together to your first lesson.
29/ Start a 2 player game
If you and him/her really love playing games, make Valentine’s day your time to buy something new and start a 2 player adventure together!
30 – 31/ Go On A Romantic Weekend Away Or Experience Day
The most fun and most romantic Valentine’s day ideas tend to be the ones where you both go away and do something unusual together. Try booking a weekend away with Secret Escapes break, or get your blood pumping with a Virgin Experience Day.
32/ Traditional presents (Roses + Chocolate)
Sometimes the traditional Valentine’s presents are the best, and I’ve already given you a huge selection of them in our Unusual Valentine’s Gifts Guide, Valentine’s Ideas For Him and Valentine’s Ideas For Her guides. So take a look at them if you want specific present ideas because they’re full of them!
33/ Start A Family Tradition
One of the cutest Valentine’s day ideas on this list in my opinion. If you’ve got kids together, start including them in your Valentine’s day celebrations and make a tradition. It can be as simple as getting a takeaway together every Valentine’s day; do something you’ll all love and appreciate together.
