As May nears an end, the British public are finally shrugging off their wooly jumpers and peering with bleary eyed wonder as we finally experience some glorious sunshine.
If, like me, you were completely unprepared for this turn of events, then we’ve got you covered with our “Hooray! Summer’s here!” must-haves.

Holiday on Ice
When the sun puts his hat on, the first thing I like to do is pour myself an ice-cold beverage and take to the decking. A freezer stocked with ice cubes becomes a necessity in the sticky heat we tend to get here in the UK. These sunshine-bright ice cube trays are perfect for storing neatly in your freezer! They’re £10 at the moment from John Lewis.
Why not make the ice cubes you’re going to make in that ice cube tray a bit cooler? Martha Stewart shows us that we can freeze our favourite flora to make our gin and elderflower that little bit more…. well, flowery in her ice cube tray above!
Perhaps you are feeling the heat, but don’t like ice cubes diluting your cocktail? These reusable ice cubes from Amazon offer the perfect solution.
Cooling Mists
These were first brought to my attention by a dear colleague who often has what we refer to as “tropical moments”. Small aerosol cans to fit in your handbag, containing nothing but water. Sounds like a but of a farce, but my goodness! When you’re feeling flushed a quick spritz on your face and neck alleviates any prickly heat and discomfort. Vichy do an excellent Spa Water spray which cools and well as soothes irritated skin. Evian produces a cooling spray that fixes your make up in place too!
Sunglasses
Not just for use in case of hangovers and late nights, sunglasses are a real wardrobe staple these days. I have several pairs based on the look I want. Cat’s eye frames for when I want a little fifties glamour, oversized, pearlised frames for when I want full on Hollywood starlet incognito, Rayban wayfarers for when I just want to look cool.
With the 90s being back in a big way, I’ve been enjoying rounder frames. Think Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an unlikely fashion icon, but his specs were bang on trend.
If you can’t live without your specs, Specsavers have some awesome prescription sunglasses in at the moment. Cheap Monday have some super stylish designs and you won’t have to fuss around with contact lenses in order to enjoy fashionable sunglasses. They also have a 2 for 1 offer, meaning you can mix and match frames and get two pairs for £99!
If you are blessed with perfect vision, you can get away with buying your sun specs from just about anywhere. Topshop and River Island are usually pretty safe bets for a fashion forward pair. ASOS have a huge range, including these eternally stylish aviators
Summer Playlist
It’s amazing how a tune can take you back to those favourite moments. Nothing says summer like your carefully cultivated summer playlist. If you are lucky enough to have music-loving parents, or maybe even grandparents, there is no doubt a veritable feast of vinyl records somewhere in the attic. With this turntable from Urban Outfitters, you can listen to anthems from the summer of ’69 at your leisure.
Maybe you’re a little bit more modern than that and prefer your tunes post-2000… if so sign up for a Spotify account. At the touch of a button you can access hundreds of your favourite bands, all for free. There are some adverts between songs, but this is minimal and the service provides unlimited music of your choice. Not too shabby!
Beach Towel
If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off this summer, or even driving off to our own fair coastlines, make sure you save yourself the shame of tatty old towels and pack a funky-fresh printed beach towel. House of Fraser are currently holding a sale on Dickins and Jones products and there are some slick and bright designs.
So make sure you pack up your sun hat and factor 50, your new favourite book and a picnic basket full of delicious snacks and whether you’re at your local park, exotic beach or in your own back garden, embrace the sunshine whilst you can, who knows when he’ll grace us with the full beams again?
